Yield: 6-8 sandwiches

Total time: 50 minutes

Ingredients

For the bread:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp active dry yeast
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup warm water
  • Sesame seeds for topping

For the sandwich:

  • 1 avocado, sliced
  • 1/2 cup pickled onions
  • 1 cup Oaxaca cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 cup chipotle pepper sauce
  • 4 boneless centre-cut pork chops (6 ounces each), excess fat trimmed

Directions:

  1. Mix the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt in a large bowl. Add the egg, vegetable oil, and warm water, and mix until the dough comes together.
  2. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a towel, and let it rise warmly for 1-2 hours or until it has doubled.
  3. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Punch down the dough and divide it into 6-8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a round roll, and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  4. Brush the rolls with beaten egg and sprinkle sesame seeds over the top. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  5. While the rolls are baking, prepare the sandwich filling. Next, slice the avocado and shred the Oaxaca cheese.
  6. If Pork, season it with salt, pepper, and other desired spices. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and cook the meat until browned and cooked.
  7. To assemble the sandwich, slice the bread rolls in half and spread chipotle pepper sauce on the bottom half. Layer the sliced avocado, pickled onions, cheese, and meat (if used) on the sauce. Close the sandwich with the top half of the bread.
  8. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Variations:

  • Substitute the beef or chicken with sliced pork or chorizo for a different flavour profile.
  • Add sliced tomato, lettuce, and mayonnaise for a more traditional sandwich experience.
  • Use a different type of cheese, such as queso fresco or Monterey Jack, to mix up the flavour and texture of the sandwich.
